Though Ray primarily represents plaintiffs in his civil practice, and only defendants in his criminal practice, periodically he is retained to represent defendants in commercial and civil rights cases. He also has an ongoing practice in commercial litigation and estate litigation.

Ray is past president of the Tompkins County Bar Association, former director and current member of the New York State Trial Lawyers Association, and member of the American Trial Lawyers Association and the New York State Bar Association.

Ray is active in the community. He is either currently serving or has served on many not-for-profit and civic boards, including Planned Parenthood of Tompkins County, Hangar Theatre, Greater Ithaca Activities Center (GIAC), Ithaca City Board of Public Works, West Hill Civic Association (WHCA), Ithaca City Common Council, Ithaca City Planning Board, Tompkins County Democratic Committee, Bosnian Student Project, and numerous project-specific civic committees and panels. Ray lectures periodically, both in the legal community and in the local schools, including the Cornell Law School.
